About Us

Breaking the Chains was founded by Debra Rush and Tiffany Apodaca in the spring of 2014. Breaking The Chains (BTC) is a local, 501c(3) non-profit organization fully immersed in rescuing victims of human trafficking. While law enforcement hunts down the abusers and dismantles human trafficking rings, Breaking the Chains is there for the victims – to help them put back the pieces and find a life that exists beyond their trauma. BTC does this through long term comprehensive trauma care, housing, life development courses, education, job support, advocacy, mentorship, transitional care and survivor leadership. The full range of our service's was painstakingly put together with the personal touch of first-hand knowledge, and experience in what victims need.

The need is growing. Over the last four years of operation, BTC has consistently pushed its capacity every day (rescuing more than 200 women and children since 2015). Additionally, BTC is also opening a 24-hour drop-in center for local law enforcement and first responders to utilize in rescue situations. This facility is scheduled to open in 2019.
